Janet Sherman is a founding partner of the law firm of Sherman & Sherman. In 1981, she received her law degree from Western State University, College of Law, at San Diego. She has been a criminal defense lawyer, in partnership with Victor Sherman, since that time. She has represented defendants in federal and state courts at both the trial and appellate levels in cases ranging from white collar crimes such as investor fraud, bank fraud, immigration fraud, health care fraud, tax fraud, securities fraud, public corruption, customs fraud and money laundering, to large-scale drug offenses, currency reporting violations, fish and game offenses, environmental crimes, counterfeiting and forgery, and numerous other criminal charges. She has handled hundreds of appeals in federal and state courts, and is an expert in federal sentencing and post-conviction remedies.

Janet Sherman has a special expertise in civil and criminal asset forfeiture, and has successfully handled numerous cases involving the government's attempted forfeiture of real property, leasehold interests, household goods, currency, vehicles, airplanes, jewelry, and other property. She has obtained attorney's fees from the government along with return of the property. She has written and spoken on this topic at numerous legal seminars.

Prior to practicing law, Ms. Sherman received her doctoral degree in sociology from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1976. Her dissertation, a study of the United States Parole Commission's "Guidelines for Decision-Making," was published by D.C. Health in 1977, entitled "Demystifying Parole."

Dr. Sherman was Associate Professor of Sociology at San Diego State University from 1975 to 1981. She taught courses in criminology and sociology of deviant behavior. She has published numerous articles in these fields, including a college text entitled, "Crime and Deviance in America: A Critical Approach," published by Wadsworth Publishing Co. in 1980.

Dr. Sherman has been admitted to practice before the Supreme Court of the United States, the United States Courts of Appeal for the Second, Third, Fourth, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits, all of the United States District Courts in California, the United States Tax Court, and all of the courts of the State of California.

Dr. Sherman is a member of the American Board of Criminal Lawyers, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, California Attorneys for Criminal Justice and the National Lawyers Guild. She has been a member of the Federal Indigent Panel of the United States District Court for the Central District of California for over ten years. She has assisted her partner, Victor Sherman, in planning and coordinating the Advanced Criminal Law Seminar held annually since 1981 in Aspen, Colorado.
